Intermittent fasting has been a trend for a while now. I first learned about this concept in 2013.

In this article, you will learn how I practice intermittent fasting and what are the dangers you expose yourself to if you choose to eat only once a day for long periods of time.

✅ FASTING

Fasting means the period of time from one meal to the next. For example, you have dinner around 8:30 PM, then you watch a series, then go to sleep.

✅ BREAK THE FAST

In the morning, around 8:00 AM you eat and, thus, “you break the fast”.

Breakfast means that you interrupt the fasting period and eat your first meal.

This first meal is called “mic dejun” in Romanian, probably taken from the French “petite dejuner”.

But you can have breakfast, or “break the fast” either at 10:00 AM, at 3:00 PM, directly in the evening at 8:30 PM or over 5 days.

✍️ I wrote about intermittent fasting in more detail here: CLICK.

✅ WHY WE FAST

The news has spread that if you skip a meal you’ll lose weight.

And it's true. If instead of 3 meals a day you will have 2 meals, that's exactly what will happen in the long run.

If you have the habit of eating 3 times a day, in a year you will have around 1,000 meals.

If you choose to skip breakfast (and the pretzel snack on the way to the office) and choose to have 2 meals a day…

In a year from, around 1,000 meals you will go down to 700 meals.

Of course you will lose weight.

I know what you want to ask me:

“But if I skip breakfast, won't I eat more at lunch?”

Yes, it is. You'll probably compensate for 2-3 days, but then you'll wake up to the fact that you skipped breakfast, it's already 2:00 PM…

…you forgot to eat, you're not hungry and you just eat normally as if you had eaten a hearty breakfast in the morning.

✅ HOW DO WE DO IT?

Many people struggle to eat all their meals within 8 hours and then try to have 16 hours of "nothing".

The most common example is: "I eat my last meal at 8:00 PM, then nothing until the next day at 2:00 PM".

Others eat their first meal at 10:00 AM, their last at 6:00 PM and then nothing until the next day at 10:00 AM. There are thousands of variations.

✅ OMAD

Some people think:

"I've seen that if I eat 2 meals instead of 3, I lose weight. But if I eat only one meal a day, I’ll lose weight even faster, right?” 😈

In the short term, yes. In the long term, not so much. 🤐

Out of the desire to have quick results, many choose to eat One Meal A Day - hence the name OMAD.t.

For years, I had ate 5 out of 7 days eating OMAD. I fell for it as well. 🤷‍♂️ If OMAD was the way to go, today I would be downright “ripped”. Yet, here I am, unsuccessful in that endeavor.

You will read below why I have not practiced or recommended OMAD for over 5 years now and what are the dangers you expose yourself to if you choose to practice this eating pattern long-term.

My conclusions from the experience of working with thousands of people over the last decade aligns perfectly with the clinical studies published in recent years.
