I had the privilege of having hundreds of phone calls with hundres of people after the first year of the pandemic.
Over 90% of them were telling me they had gained between 10 and 12 kilos of weight.
I must confess that the pandemic has radically changed my perception of the actions that are truly important in the weightloss and maintenance processes.
The Body Engineering program has changed thanks to precious insight I gained from thousands of members in 2020.
✅ THE SAME STORY
I heard the same story every day, I thought they were all in on it.
“I got fat again because I ate a lot of junk”.
“I gained weight because I ate at an inappropriate hour”.
„I gained weight because I ordered more take-out”.
I used to listen carefully and then explain.
✅ “HERE’S WHY YOU GAINED WEIGHT DURING THE PANDEMIC”
One kilogram of human fat is estimated at around 8000 calories.
Let’s say someone put on an extra 12 kilograms of weight in one year.
Out of those 12 kg, 2 kilograms are mostly water. Maybe the person ate a bit more, so their “pipes” are also full. So, let’s say 10 kilos represent the real surplus.
Body fat is the DIFFERENCE between than the energy we eat (carbs / fats) and the energy we consume by motion (walking, exercising, weight lifting, farming, gardening, etc.)
If someone has gained 10 kilograms in one year, it means they ate 80000 more calories than their daily necessary intake over 365 days.
If we divide 80000 calories by 365 days = 222 calories per day.
✅ HOW DOES ONE GAIN 10 KILOS IN ONE YEAR?
In order to gain 10 kilograms of weight in one year, all you have to do is eat, on average, 222 extra calories per day.
So, if you are a static woman and your daily necessary intake is 1600 calories, then all you have to do is eat 1800 calories on average every day.
Let’s say you eat perfectly for a whole week (1600 calories per day). But you go to the movies on Sunday and you eat a whole big bag of popcorn (200 grams).
One big bag of popcorn is around 1000 calories. If you are in the habit of doing this, you’ll gain 10 kilograms of fat in one year.
✅ WHAT HAS 200 CALORIES?
Half of a pretzel.
50 grams of chocolate, crackers, wafers, biscuits or crisps, or any other treat you might think of = between 200 and 300 calories.
30 grams of peanuts, nuts or sunflower seeds (one fistful a day, like “specialists” recommend) = between 200 and 300 calories.
One 200 ml glass of fine French wine = 200 calories.
One and a half spoons of olive oil poured in your salad = 200 calories.
It is extremely easy to eat those extra 200 calories. It’s very easy not to realize you have already eaten them, all while keeping 100% correct diet plan.
But wait, there’s something even more interesting coming up.
✅ MY PERCEPTION
My perception on human eating behavior has completely changed after the first pandemic year.
I have reached the conclusion that most people have perfectly normal, decent eating habits. Most people don’t overeat or exaggerate.
Most people don’t believe they need sophisticated nutrition programs or all sorts of special, personalized diet plans (“personalized” = here is another word that sells).
🏆 PRO Tip: Just our of curiosity, did we ever advertise any sort of “personalized” nutrition programs?
I guess you already know that what we offer is an educational program. Community members will personalize their own diets based on the information we provide.
I strongly believe that most people only need a minimal educational boost in order to have a better dietary behavior.
This is what this Substack is all about?
✅ WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED DURING THE FIRST PANDEMIC YEAR
Everyday people stopped walking to their cars.
Everyday people stopped walking to the office and then to lunch.
Everyday people stopped walking to the grocery store so often.
Everyday people stopped taking their kids to the park.
Everyday people stopped walking for that HOUR it used to take them to solve their daily tasks.
Do you know how many calories are consumed by a woman who is 165 cm tall and who weighs 65 kilograms if she walks at a speed of 5 km/h?
You guessed it: 222 calories.
A man weighing in at 90 kg who walks for an hour at a speed of 6 km/h will burn, on average, 333 calories.
So, if you think about it…
Most people ate a normal, clean diet, without exaggerating, and they gained those extra 10 kilos because they stopped walking for that hour per day.
Do you realize you can lose 10-12 kilos per year just by walking for an hour daily? And everything with no dietary change.
Do you realize that with tiny, precise adjustments, you can lose an extra 10-12 kilos in one year? (Meaning, not eating those extra 200 calories of junk food every day).
Do you realize that with just one hour of walking and by paying just a little bit of attention to what you eat you can lose 20, maybe even 30 kilograms of weight by this time next year? Effortlessly and without “going on a diet”.
