How I failed for 30 years
✅ DEFECTIVE KNOWLEDGE
Since I was a child, my size always varied from being overweight to downright obese. I was either the fattest kid in my class, or the second fattest.
Since I was a child and until I turned 30 years old, I exercised in order to lose weight. Over time, this has led me to 5 knee surgeries and a herniated disk.
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF FAILURE
1) I thought exercising helps in the weight loss process, but now we know very well that it’s not like that. In my opinion, if you are overweight, you shouldn’t exercise a lot. Someone who is overweight would benefit from walking, climbing stairs and swimming. That’s about it.
2) I thought grains were healthy, I thought wholegrains were even recommended for losing weight. Grains are actually used to fatten animals. In order to make foie gras, you need a duck (preferably a static one) and grains.
3) I thought success is about moderation, eating a little bit of everything. Maybe some cereal in the morning, a slice of bread and a pretzel during the day and also a small dessert. But who can have just a spoonful of that?
4) I thought that fruits are a never ending stream of health and that they are full of vitamins. Therefore, fresh fruit juices should be excellent for losing weight. However, fruits are just sugar water.
5) I thought that the ideal daily meal plan consists of 3 meals and 2 snacks. I practiced this principle to the extreme. For years, I ate 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. But who has the time to prepare 5 small meals a day? For the rest of their lives?
6) One of my core beliefs used to be that if I want to lose weight, I should eat less. In order to eat less, food should be weighed and calories should be counted. I ate in partnership with Excel files for years. The result? I failed.
7) I thought breakfast was the most important meal of the day. So I guess that if you want to lose weight, it makes sense to start your day by eating, right?
8) I thought that the last meal of the day should be at 6 PM. I used to eat in my car while waiting at the traffic lights on my way home. Then I would get home. After 2-3 hours, I would open the fridge. I never thought of actually putting a lock on it.
9) I thought that I was only allowed to have 2 eggs per week. Fortunately, after 50 years of studies that never managed to correlate cholesterol to cardiovascular disease, “cholesterol” was finally taken out of the “concerning” dietary list by the US. I have been eating at least 5 eggs a day for 13 years.
10) I thought I would follow in my obese / diabetic parents’ footsteps. At 24 years old I was obese and prediabetic. Studying and practice over the past 13 years have saved me. Today my weight is normal and my medical test results are excellent.
TO CONCLUDE
To conclude, many people say about me that I “exaggerate”. But is it really abnormal to want to have an optimal weight and be healthy?
Moreover, I don’t want my children to have to go through what I have been through.
In time, this need of mine has turned into a hobby. The hobby turned into a passion project. The passion project turned into a mission.
