Aren't you drinking tonight?
During a presentation I held at a company’s headquarters, I was asked about alcohol:
"So, will you have a drink tonight..?"
I answered that I don't drink alcohol, but in my mind I had another answer altogether...
✅ CALORIES
First of all, I don't drink my calories.
I don't drink fresh juice, smoothies, cream soups, yogurts, sodas or... alcohol.
A main pillar of the Body Engineering philosophy is:
We don't drink calories. Calories are eaten, not drunk.
✅ ALCOHOL
In short, alcohol:
is addictive;
is 100% converted into fat by the liver;
has been classified by the WHO as a group 1 carcinogen (along with tobacco and plutonium).
"We cannot talk about a so-called safe level of alcohol consumption. It doesn't matter how much you drink, the risk to the drinker's health starts from the first drop of any alcoholic beverage".
Read more about it here:
The Truth about Alcohol
My home country of Romania is number 1 in alcohol consumption in Europe. And number 10 in the world. As a reference, Russia, the usual suspect, is #16.
✅ HORRIBLE FAT
Ladies, do you know that horrible-looking fat on your belly? It's from that glass of wine.
Do you want to lose it? You’ll do billions of sit-ups and all kinds of expensive treatments in vain.
That fat only disappears by giving up the glass of wine.
I’ve had the privilege of working 1:1 with thousands of women over the years.
I don't think you want me to tell you just how awful alcohol truly is.
If you've been caught by the mirage of fine wine and you've just started drinking...
Stop now while you still can.
If alcohol has caught you in its clutches, no one and nothing can help you.
Belly fat will be your very last problem.
✅ JUST ONE GLASS
We all know the story too well.
You only drink 1 glass of wine in the evening to relax.
You lie to yourself that it's a high quality wine from France, it’s dry, grapes were grown on a south-facing slope, blah blah blah.
When you order a glass of wine in a restaurant, you’ll get 150ml of wine. No one will ever pour you more. For economic reasons, obviously.
But you also know that if you go out on the town, you’ll have 2 glasses, not just 1.
But at home, over time, slowly, slowly, having 2 wine glasses will become the new normal.
I mean, it's not something out of the ordinary. It's just 2 small glasses of wine (a total of 300 ml).
It's not like you drink a bottle of wine every evening.
Who does that anyway?
✅ CALORIE SHMALORIE
Have you ever noticed that wine bottle labels don't list the number of calories?
No worries, that's what I'm here for.
To provide you with quality information so you can make the best decisions for yourself and your family.
Dry wines contain an average of 13% alcohol and about 2-3 grams of sugar.
1g of alcohol: 7 calories
1g of sugar: 4 calories
Let's do a quick calculation:
13g of alcohol x 7 calories = 91 calories
2.5g of sugar x 4 calories = 10 calories
1 liter of “clean”, country wine (the one your grandpa makes in his backyard) contains 1,000 calories.
I guess if you're part of the elite of educated people who want to be fit, healthy and do prevention, you don't drink wine spritzers or beer.
Wine spritzers are for day laborers.
✅ SERIC BACON
Isn't it surprising that a 750 ml bottle of wine has 750 calories?
Do you know what else has 750 calories? Half a pack of butter.
You may be wondering what the connection is.
Well, alcohol is completely converted by the liver into fat - that is, into triglycerides.
Basically, after you drink a bottle of wine of the highest quality, half a pack of butter circulates through your blood for a period of time.
That means your blood will be fatter during that period of time.
Fat blood is called lipemic serum.
That's why you're not allowed to drink alcohol 2-3 days before donating blood.
Did you know that many people are eligible to donate blood but can't go 2-3 days without putting a drop of alcohol in their mouth?
There are also great studies showing that the fat resulting from alcohol metabolism tends to be preferentially stored in and between organs (not on the bottom or the back).
If you’re a drinker, it's not like you're going to give up alcohol because I'm presenting you with some studies.
You only have one life to live and you obviously know better what’s good for you.
I write:
for those who can still give up alcohol completely.
for those who still think alcohol is just a pastime.
for those who know what they want from life.
✅ LET’S DRAW A LINE
“I drink 1 glass of wine in the evening to relax” translates into: I actually drink 2 glasses of wine in the evening.
That is, every 2 days, you’ll go through a bottle of wine.
Without adding anything extra on the weekend…
“I drink only 1 glass of wine in the evening” means that you will drink around 15 bottles of wine per month.
The alcohol in a bottle of wine (750ml) is transformed by the liver into 100g of butter.
15 bottles of wine = 1.5 kg of butter
So ladies, instead of losing 1.5 kg of butter from your arms, neck, belly, butt, you will end up not losing weight at all.
What is even sadder is that:
During the day you will starve yourself, eat very little and not particularly well;
In the evening you’ll drink "just that one glass of prosecco";
And when you draw the line at the end of the month, you’ll discover you’ve gained weight.
You’ve gained weight, but lost in all other aspects:
you will have aged prematurely;
you will have dark circles around your eyes, wrinkles, stretch marks;
and your hair will start falling out from malnutrition.
You’ll think I'm exaggerating again, but deep down, you know I'm right.
✅ JUST ONE GLASS RELOADED
And if you only drink one glass of wine, a perfectly weighed 150ml glass…
You know very well that alcohol makes you “a little hungry”.
And 100g of any snack in the world contains an average of 500 calories: chips, peanuts, biscuits, crisps, nachos, popcorn.
It’s that junk food you keep “hidden” in your cupboards.
✅ JUST LETTING YOU KNOW
I hereby inform you that 100g of human fat contains about 750 calories.
I will also inform you that an hour of walking consumes an average of 200 calories.
If you started the day with 2 pretzels and a sandwich (1,000 calories) and you finished the day by taking in another 600 calories from a glass of wine and 70g of any snack…
How do you ever think you’ll have a chance to lose weight?
✅ I’M NOT TELLING YOU WHAT TO DO
I can only tell you what I do.
I don't have any bottles of alcohol in the house.
I don't even have glasses of alcohol.
I've never even particularly liked drinking.
I used to do some light drinking during college, I maybe had a glass of wine after exams. At some point I felt my body say one evening:
"Man, a drink would be good."
✅ MY GRANDPA
Then I remembered the advice I received from my grandfather in the country-side:
"Remember what I tell you: a glass of wine is only good after a day of hard labor"
I immediately stopped drinking.
At family gatherings, mostly because of peer pressure, I still had a glass of wine on Easter or New Year's Eve.
4 years ago, I decided that I would no longer allow anyone to tell me what to do.
So, since 2020 I haven't put a single drop of alcohol in my mouth.
✅ THE BIG PROBLEM
The big problem with alcohol is that if you don't drink, people will immediately assume that you have a problem.
"What, are you sick?"
"What, are you pregnant?"
In a woman, belly fat from sugar and alcohol will indicate exactly this.
Alcohol consumption is socially encouraged on a massive scale.
If you don't drink:
you're antisocial;
"you've become religious";
you're no longer cool.
The way you know me...
Do you REALLY think anyone has the courage to ask me why I don't drink alcohol or insist that I drink?
You guessed it, no one has the courage to insist anymore because they know who they're dealing with.
In the 15 years since I lost weight and maintained my figure, I've done everything possible to consolidate my new identity.
✅ I AM OBSESSED WITH SLEEP
You know I'm obsessed with sleep.
I do my best to go to bed and also put the kids to sleep as early as possible.
If you follow my Instagram account, the first thing I post in my stories every day is my sleep report that I get from my Oura ring.
3 days out of 7 I fall asleep before 9:00 PM, during the rest of the week I fall asleep somewhere between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM.
I very rarely fall asleep after 10:30 PM.
✅ SLEEP = REPAIRS
Early sleep allows you to access the "Deep Sleep" – the sleep sequence responsible for internal repairs.
I like to fall asleep early because sleep completely repairs me.
I want to repair myself as best as possible in order to live as long as possible.
✅ WHAT I LIKE
I like to go to sleep early because I can then wake up between 4 and 5 AM without an alarm blaring from my phone.
I’ll wake up 100% fresh, with a clear mind. I’ll then drink my coffee and go into a writing trance.
I like to go to sleep early because that way I eat less and less often.
I like to go to sleep early because that way I don't get sweet cravings.
You read that right...
Quality sleep decreases the amount of food you eat, decreases the magnitude and frequency of sweet cravings and you’ll also have fewer meals.
Basically, the earlier you get used to going to bed, the faster you will lose weight and the easier it will be to maintain your figure.
✅ I HAVE DECIDED
I decided to give up alcohol completely since I noticed that alcohol dramatically decreases the quality of sleep.
What are we doing here?
Do we consume calories that we don't particularly like and ruin the gains we've worked on for 15 years?
If I want to have fun with calories, I’ll eat some original Dubai chocolate or some pizza.
What are we really talking about here?
One more thing. Letting my kids see me with a bottle in my hand and smelling of alcohol? That's absolutely out of the question.
Maybe I'm exaggerating.
But have you considered that maybe we have different standards?
✅ AT THE SYMPOSIUM
During my presentation, I was asked if I was going to have a glass of wine at the party that evening
I said: “Of course not”.
But in my mind, the complete answer was:
"The gala starts at 8:00 PM, and I'm usually in bed by 8:30 PM. I'm not even showing up to the party, let alone have a glass of wine."
✅ ARE YOU THINKING OF MAKING A CHANGE?
Let's not go there: "I read the articles, but the advice in there doesn't work."
If you’re always saying that "you only have one life to live", you should maybe look for a nutritionist, a dietitian, a medical specialist who can incorporate your calories from alcohol into a personalized plan.
🏆 PRO Tip: if you want to lose weight with alcohol, you can. But you will have to have small meals, weigh absolutely all your portions and count your calories.
Good luck, we don't do that.
